I'm using to get an approximate position on a hole so that I can actually measure it. It's been working fairly well. I think most of my problems have been lack of familiarity with the tool.

I might have figured it out. I think it was a problem with Free Position Alignment. I haven't used it much since the CMMs use a fixture plate so I'm still getting used to how it works.

In the attached photo, I just clicked "Use Current". As you can see the DRO doesn't match.

I mentioned SolidWorks because it's what I know but I think you could also do it in Inventor.

The easiest way is SolidWorks but if you don't have that there are some open source programs out there that can do it. The problem is that STL files and IGES files store data very differently so there can be some error in the conversion.

The more points you take, the more accurate your flatness will be. Try doubling or tripling your points and see what you get.

It's a single feature control frame and I have the box unchecked. It is fully constrained for the PLTZ and 2 datums for FRTZ. I was reporting position from Datum Features.
